I almost felt he should have opted for baseball. No one is denying his talent, but it just doesn't translate very well to today's NFL.

Agreed - but (cue ae's broken record) it does translate very well to today's Canadian Football League.  I wish he'd just ask the Dolphins for an unconditional release and get his agent to hook him up with a CFL team.  The Edmonton Eskimoes could sure use him, with their anemic offense.

I suppose there's more money in baseball, but I think Pat really wants (or wanted...) to play football.

Would depend on if he made it to the majors or not.

I have no idea how much CFL players make, but lower level minor league baseball players don't make much.
The average CFL player from what I was able to find is around 100k a year way less than rookie min. in the NFL. the better players and qbs make in the 300k-600k range. I do remember Rocket Ismual (sp) making 7 figures when he was playing up there. Thats an idea anyway.

Coach Sparano on the PW situation here:

A little more from the Palm Beach Post:

http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thedailydolphin/

Quote
July 31st, 2010 by Ben Volin
Dolphins coach Tony Sparano added a little clarity to the Pat White situation Saturday afternoon, saying that his young quarterback was excused from Friday’s practice as he deals with “personal health issues,” which Sparano further clarified as a mental issue, nothing physical.

Despite a report that White would miss all of training camp and perhaps the entire 2010 season, White returned to the practice field on Saturday and participated fully with his teammates. He also signed autographs for 15 minutes after practice.

“We were dealing with some personal health issues with him that we wanted to get checked out,” Sparano said in between Saturday’s two-a-day practice. “We did, we were all satisfied and had him back out on the field today, so everything’s good and he’s ready to go.”

White worked as a backup to Chad Henne on Saturday, and Sparano said that White, known more for his running skills than passing, is still “strictly a quarterback.” Sparano said he would not divulge the conversations he has had with White over the past few days.

“I’m not going to get into what I talk about with my players, but Pat White’s out here, ready to go,” Sparano said.

FWIW.My brother just called me from the Dolphins training camp. He said after the practice it was only the lineman who were delegated to go to the public to talk and sign autographs today. Every other player went into the locker room except PW. He stayed outside by an out building and talked for a very long time with his parents. after he left them he was absolutely MOBBED by reporters..surrounded and microphones pushed on him including some on booms. I'll send pix when my brother can get one of his kids to send them to me for him.  doh funny....Something goin' on no doubt about it.  paranoid

Words from and about Pat in a story in this morning's Palm Beach Post, probably from that mob session with reporters:

Quote
"We can talk about football from here on out," White, the Dolphins backup quarterback, said after participating in both of the day's practice sessions. "Personal issues [are] over. It's done with, and I'm back to football. Excited to be out here, enthused and enjoying the atmosphere."

Quote
How long White, a 2009 second-round draft pick, remains on the active roster is an open question. He continues to deal with a serious issue that a Dolphins source described as "ongoing" and "fluid."

According to sources, it could take six to eight weeks to determine if White will be able to proceed with this season.

– Pat White’s father, Bo White, on whether his son is committed to the Dolphins: “Of course he’s committed. Brett Favre wasn’t there the first day. Do you ask him the same thing?”

You go, Bo!

Quote
– Backup quarterback Tyler Thigpen, on White’s return to the field: “He knew that coming out today, he had to carry himself in a professional way, and I think he did a very good job of that. Everybody’s behind him – not sure what’s going on, but we’re behind him 100 percent. He’s our teammate.”

Good words from Thigpen, the man PW is in head-to-head competition with for a roster spot.

E-mail waiting for me this morning from South FLa....."Just watched the 11 o'clock  Miami news. The whole Dolphin report were high lights of Pat's practice today and the simple response of his after practice interview was that he now has all his problems behind him."

my unprofessional and usually wrong guess....

He was at a cross roads. His football dream is an uphill battle and he had baseball at will. What does he do?

He just followed his heart imo.

I know it's a PW thread but just wanted to put this out there

Ellis Lankster is further bolstering Buffalo's loaded secondary. We knew entering camp that Buffalo was deepest in the defensive backfield (though an argument can certainly be made at running back), but we also knew that the Bills had several young defensive backs that were unknown commodities. Lankster, a second-year pro out of West Virginia, was one of those players. He's having an outstanding camp thus far, with a highlight-reel interception and several excellent pass break-ups under his belt. He also appears to be one of the team's most naturally athletic defensive backs, and while the Bills are deep, they don't have many truly outstanding athletes at corner. Last year's seventh-round pick looks like a lock to make the team at this point, and don't be surprised if he continues to surge up the depth chart over the next several weeks.

I thought the Bills got a steal where they got Ellis and he's proving it.

And SPD I agree with your evaluation of what was happening with PW. I think he had a bit of a crisis of faith in his path and took a day to get his head right.

The media and fans will be ruthless. Especially when the Fins used a 2 (a high 2 at that) on a qb . Pat doesn't have the luxury that Kevin Kolb had playing and learning behind D-Nabb. Results are expected with a 2nd rounder. Not Pat's fault but the NFL is all business....for papers, fans and players. Soprano is a players coach that's for sure

I don't care how many pounds of muscle he puts on 9-18-27? He's too frail for the NFL with his style of play. Hell, Moose Roethlesberger gets a concussion or more every year just running for his life off broken plays.
Look into MLB options while you still have some youth and health left Pat...

Commentary:  It's complicated trying to figure out Pat White

Dave George, Palm Beach Post

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/dolphins/commentary-its-complicated-trying-to-figure-out-pat-835842.html

Support from teammates:

Quote
"Pat's progress over the last two years has been amazing," said Pennington, who became a starter in his third NFL season with the New York Jets. "I've never seen anything like it. He came in as a sprint quarterback and has been able in two years to consume himself with our pro-style offense, understand it and now start to execute it. That's extremely hard to do."

Quote
"Pat is one great athlete," Davone Bess said. "He can move. He can throw the ball. He's a special player. He complicates matters for the defense. The sky's the limit for him."
