With Shaq Petteway it's long been rumored that he may be a riisk to not qualify. Stew has said moving forward they're going to have to think a player is really special to take them if they're an academic risk and maybe they just don't think he's special enough.

Maybe not super "special" but I think there is something special about guys that have been long time fans of the program and want to join it.  Loyalty alone isn't enough to justify an offer but when there's significant talent that goes with it . . . it should count for something.  I'm at a loss.

I also hate to see us pass up on quality players that want to be Mountaineers. I'll just hold out hope that these players are given the opportunity to be one.

I believe our season will either help or hurt our recruiting efforts. We win the BE and get to another BCS bowl and we will be in the drivers seat. If not it could be a long row to hoe with some of these kids.
how about just win the BCS championship this year then we could probably get some pretty highly touted guys,  i know that isnt too much to ask this year....

I'm not saying that's for sure the reason they passed for him, just guessing and if that's the case I honestly can't blame them too much.

I like Petteway a lot as a player, but if they have significant concern that he won't qualify and they feel they can get someone else who is as good or close and will then I'm fine with them doing that.

Now in Tampa. Have my WVU gear on and ready to begin recruiting. Guys it's freaking 97 at night here, no wonder these kids are tough.

Here's another similar take on Scott's decision and his thoughts on WVU

Quote
In mid-May, Scott and his mother drove to Morgantown to visit West Virginia University.

Their first impression was immediate and inescapable.

"It was in the mountains, which I'm not used to," Scott said, "and it seemed really, really cold."

Scott met with Mountaineers recruiting coordinator Chris Beatty, a former North Stafford High School head coach. They shared stories of the Commonwealth District before Beatty shared stories of the Big East.

Scott was in awe of the Mountaineers' football facility. He said the weight room was nearly twice the size of North Carolina's. The game room dwarfed the others as well, replete with Xbox, PlayStation and Wii gaming systems, and pool tables.

At practice, Scott appreciated the interaction between players and coaches.

"If you did something wrong, they don't yell, they pull you to the side," Scott said. "And it seemed like the players were all really close."

Tamika Scott's biggest concern about West Virginia was its apparent focus. The football facility is not near the main campus, and the coaches did not arrange a campus tour.

"All we saw was football fields and it seemed like it was all about football," she said. "As a parent, I wanted to see it be about education, too."

West Virginia's chances of securing a commitment from Scott increased last week, when Scott's Colonial Forge teammate Eric Frohnapfel committed to the Mountaineers.

That day, Frohnapfel called Scott and posted "WVU" on his Facebook page.

"I'm trying to recruit him now," Frohnapfel said.

- I love hearing that a recruit loved our facilities. We all know they are pretty good, but I'm sure most recruits have a negative image in mind when they think about our facilities.

- It is a little bit surprising that a Coach like Stew wouldn't focus more on the academic side. That seems very odd.

- Just thought it was interesting to read.
Wonder what Momma Scott will say when Butchy Boy and UNC get nailed with sanctions.

Said it more than once - I can tolerate an Ohio winter more than a Florida summer.  All that migration to the Sun Belt is just fine with me - less crowded for the rest of us up here.

Tell Skip Holtz the Mountaineer Nation sends its love and we're looking forward to seeing him back in Mo'town.

WVU in top 5 for Curt Evans (WR from FL) - the other 4 are Nebraska, Duke, Vandy, and WVU.  Seems as though WVU is probably 5th on his list.  If this kid would seriously consider Duke or Vandy over WVU - good luck to him.

Kid has a 3.5 GPA according to Rivals - maybe he cares a lot about academics and is considering a future beyond college other than football.  Sadly, a WVU degree isn't as prestigious as one from Duke or Vandy - especially wrt graduate and professional schools.

Edit:  That's a 3.5 GPA in a private college prep high school:  http://www.cmlions.org/s/315/newindex.aspx?sid=315&gid=1&pgid=270

Edit again:  Grades first, football second - http://www.soflafootball.com/feature/no-leaders-for-evans-yet

DB Makinton Dorleant committed to Wisconsin, also he repeated what i said a few weeks ago that WVU would not let him visit until after his season so he went ahead and committed his other favorite without even visiting them.

My guess is that he wasn't very high on their list. They wanted him to wait until towards the end of the season to visit.

couldnt think of any other reason, by the end of the season the coaches would know where they stand with higher guys on their board and then would know if they should take him at that point.

Per Luke Stampini: JT Thornton will most likely pick Illinois very soon, he once favored WVU
