I have to admit. I'm not sure where the OL criticisms are coming from. For one, Geno was never sacked. For two, many of the poor passes were not due to pressure but just plain bad decisions. It was his first full game; he'll have those. The run-blocking could've been better at times, but it was clear that CC's game plan was to key on Devine. We didn't make it any easier with some of the calls either, such as running weak side with some narrow lanes a couple of times. In addition, I give CC's defensive coaches some credit. Whoever taught them fundamentals really engrained some sound tackling techniques into them and their strips were well done too. I'm not pretending the OL or anyone had a perfect game and I'm not pretending that CC is amazing. I'm just throwing out some observations that I feel like people are ignoring. It's easy to say the OL did poorly because that's what's been in the news and on our minds for over 2 seasons now. Someone can find something wrong on probably most plays, and if we're looking for what's wrong with the OL, we'll see it. But we might just miss what's right in the process. It's clear we're still trying to get the right side fixed, and until the injury, I thought Bowers did a great job when he was in there. Please don't tell me I'm the only one who saw that? For me, Daxx hit the nail on the head. I'm less concerned with today's performance and more concerned with what I haven't seen the past two seasons...improvement. I don't care how badly we play as long as we win and as long as I see a better performance the next week and the week after and the week after.
And anything short of an A+ for the defense is silly. We pitched a shut out. This is the first home shutout in 13 years. It's the first shutout in 5 years against a Cincy team that was probably as poor as CC today. I remember when Jim Rome remarked, "Cincy has a football team?" Yes. They were that bad. To get a sense of how difficult this is, San Jose St. scored 3 on the #1 team in the nation tonight. When you factor in that we still held them when our 2nd and 3rd string guys were in, I'm pretty happy with the depth on D.
